Where are the NM concealed carry courses taught?
All of our courses are taught at the Albuquerque Shooting Range Park, located on the west mesa near the Double Eagle Airport.
How long is the course?
Course length is two days. Day one and the morning of day two are spent in the classroom and then the afternoon of day two is spent on the range.
Am I required to shoot a handgun as part of the course?
Yes. You will take a marksmanship competency exam consisting of firing 25 shots at a 12×18 piece of paper. You will shoot 15 rounds at a distance of 3 yards and 10 rounds at 7 yards. You will receive 4 points for each shot that hits the paper and you must receive a minimum 72% to pass.
Do I need to own a handgun in order to take the course?
No. We have handgun rentals available.

What are the requirements for a NM concealed carry license?
You must be 21 years old, a US citizen or permanent resident, a NM resident or a member/dependent of an individual in the armed forces permanently stationed in NM, and you must satisfactorily complete a NM DPS-approved firearms training program.
I have a non-resident concealed carry license from another state? Is that license valid in NM?
If you are a NM resident you must obtain the NM concealed carry license in order to legally carry concealed within NM. No reciprocity shall be afforded to a license issued by another state to a NM resident.
Are military personnel and military veterans required to take the course?
If you are active military or honorably discharged within the past 20 years, you are not required to take the course; however, we encourage military personnel and military veterans to take the course in order that they can increase their firearm knowledge and learn about the NM firearm laws. Are retired law enforcement officers required to take the course?
If you have retired from law enforcement after a minimum of 15 years employment you are not required to take the course; however we encourage retired law enforcement officers to take the course in order that they can increase their firearm knowledge and learn about the NM firearms laws. What reasons may an individual be denied a NM concealed carry license?
An individual may be denied for any of the following reasons: that individual is a fugitive from justice; has a felony conviction; is currently under indictment for a felony criminal offense in NM or any other state or pursuant to the laws of US or any other jurisdiction; is prohibited by federal law or the law of any other jurisdiction from purchasing or possessing a firearm; has been adjudicated mentally incompetent or committed to a mental institution; is addicted to alcohol or controlled substances; has received a conditional discharge, a diversion or a deferment or has been convicted of, pled guilty to or entered a plea of no contest to a misdemeanor offense involving a crime of violence within the last 10 years; has been convicted of a misdemeanor offense involving driving while under the influence of liquor or drugs within the last 5 years; has been convicted of a misdemeanor offense involving the possession or abuse of a controlled substance within the last 10 years; or has been convicted of a misdemeanor offense involving assault, battery or battery against a household member at any time in the past.
How long is my license valid?
NM concealed carry licenses are valid for a period of 4 years from the date of issue, unless the license is suspended or revoked.
NM concealed carry licenses issued to honorably discharged veterans are valid for a period of 5 years from the date of issue, unless the license is suspended or revoked.
What handgun should I qualify with?
You should demonstrate your handgun competency in the highest caliber of the handgun for which you seek certification. The minimum allowable is a .32 caliber. The NM concealed carry law allows for licensees to be certified to carry a semi-automatic, revolver or derringer. During the qualification you must demonstrate your handgun competency with each type of handgun for which you wish to be licensed. I.e. if you wish to be certified to carry a semi-auto you must certify with a semi-auto; if you wish to be certified to carry a revolver you must certify with a revolver; and if you wish to be certified to carry a derringer you must certify with a derringer.
How do I apply for a NM concealed carry license?
Upon successful completion of the course you must remit to the NM Department of Public Safety the following: a completed 2-page application; health information release form; authorization for release of information form; $100 application fee; certified copy of birth certificate or proof of US citizenship if not born in the US; NM concealed carry course completion certificate; and a photocopy of your NM driver’s license. You will also be required to be digitally finger printed. The application packet and instructions regarding the finger printing process will be provided to you during the course.
Where can I obtain the required fingerprints?
Effective Jan. 1, 2014 fingerprints are required to be livescan digital and must be obtained through Ifentogo, the official DPS contractor. Go to https://nm.state.identogo.com/ and click on the NM icon for further information or to register for your fingerprints.
How much do the digital fingerprints cost?
The regular fee is $59. If you are applying for the military license or the retired law enforcement license, the fee is $29.
I had my fingerprints taken for another reason. Am I required to get my fingerprints done again for my concealed carry license?
Yes. The NM DPS Concealed Carry Unit does not have access to fingerprints that have been submitted to another agency or employer.
